1/4 Life
¼ Life is a Zine that’s inspired by Jean Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation, exploring ideas of the absurdity of being alive, real and unreal, and where states of being, such as dreams, memories, drug use, fantasy, and digital spaces. The imagery compiled to create this work is a mix of real photos taken by me, but also feigned aesthetics to create a simulacra for a nostalgia of a time and place that does not exist.
These ideas are salient in recognizable pop culture movements such as vapor wave or sea punk. The cover of my zine morphs vapor wave, sea punk, and Bauhaus designs into a single product that reflects the multiverse of the internet, consuming things across time and parts of the world at an explosive rate.
Seapunk, Artist Unknown, 2011
What I love visually about these aesthetics is that they break everything down into simple, yet abstract components, and let everything exist sporadically on a liminal plane.
Bauhaus Archive, 1972
I’m attracted to this because it feels like we are living in the liminal plane right now. Only it is more of a cacophony than what these modernist or early internet movements promised.
